Adam Hochschild has written best selling books about a Belgian King’s holocaust in the Congo and another about the brave British women who fought against the insanity of the first world war. His new book is Spain in Our Hearts: Americans in the Spanish Civil War 1936-39. It’s about 2800 American men and women, black and white who illegally went to fight the fascists in that largely forgotten but hugely important war. Hochschild paints a vivid picture of what it was really like, for journalists like Hemingway and for the average Spaniards, including women who were openly raped and murdered by Franco’s forces. It’s a lesson all Americans should know.
