If we’re spending billions on a defense system that actually makes us more vulnerable, maybe it’s time to reconsider. According to today’s guest Foreign Policy in Focus columnist Conn Hallinan, NATO has gone from serving as a bulwark against the Soviet Union to needlessly provoking a potential nuclear attack. The early 1990s were a missed opportunity, now NATO has extended eastward after promises were made by the first Bush’s secretary of state James Baker that the military alliance would not move “one inch east.” In annexing Crimea, Russia merely did what NATO did with Serbia and Kosovo. And they are in Ukraine right on their border. Russia been invaded many times from the west losing millions of lives. Now in 2018, both sides have re-positioned toward “early reaction.” Of course this is all lost in the “all Trump all the time” news. But perhaps it really is time to reconsider NATO.
