As it did in the 1920s with the Scopes Trial, the American right hates science. It presents them with truths they need to deny. Clearly on climate change but also when it comes to enabling the social change needed to understand racism. In his new book Race and Social Change: a Quest, a Study, a Call to Action, author Max Klau looks into scientific research examining individual behavior within systems. His research uncovered some surprises, such as more structure yielding more creativity. Understanding what systems and institutions motivate racism can also lead to understanding ways out. No wonder the right hates science.
