To research for his new book, Thomas Frank specifically went to pro-Bill Clinton sources. Yet what he found left a profoundly negative impression of his presidency and what it did to the Democratic Party. Author of 2004’s What’s The Matter With Kansas, Thomas Frank’s new book is Listen Liberal, or Whatever Happened to the Party of the People? Republican obstructionism is not to blame for the increase in economic inequality; Frank describes how it is Democratic administrations over the last 40 years that have reinforced the myth of rugged individualism instead of empowering its former base of middle class and working people. Those groups were tossed out by Democrats themselves in a new version of meritocracy and catering to the rich and powerful instead. All Democrats would benefit to listen.
