More and more people are coming to the conclusion that keeping power utilities in corporate hands no longer makes sense. Legislators in conservative places like Hudson Valley and Massena NY are passing laws to put ownership of power companies in public hands. As of now, what incentive is there to invest savings into needed repairs? A private power company is about guaranteeing shareholder profits but a socialized power company is designed to meet public needs. Another example besides power, our guest Liza Featherstone argues, is that for-profit health insurance is not a good fit for our needs. For example, with rural hospitals closing, it’s far cheaper to municipalize ownership than to have to fly low income heartland Americans on super expensive helicopters for their urgent treatment. Under public ownership, the only incentive for public utilities is to serve the public. Perhaps even Amazon has crossed over and now qualifies as an essential public utility.
